Sunday Salon: Back to the Library/New Challenge

This past week I've borrowed about seven books from the library, my first big library haul in a long while.

I finished reading Madam, Will You Talk by an old favorite, Mary Stewart. Most memorable moments in the book: high speed car chases through Southern France - from Avignon to Nimes to Marseilles!

Started two books to read for the Japanese Literature Challenge before it ends in January:
Beauty and Sadness, a classic by Nobel Prize winner Kawabata, and also Murakami's third novel, A Wild Sheep Chase.

Borrowed three of the funny mystery novels I included in my post on Most Humorous Mysteries. Started Dim Sum Dead then found I had read it years ago. Set in Santa Monica, a guy finds an antique silver sword, only to have it stolen at the Farmers Market downtown. There's more to this than just the theft!

Since I'm always reading mysteries, suspense, and thrillers anyway, I just joined a reading challenge that fits the bill- Thriller & Suspense Reading Challenge 2010.

  1. I can't believe how quickly the weeks are flying by! So, did you finish Dim Sum Dead? That's happened to me before and I didn't read to the end. Just too many books I haven't read :D Enjoy your Challenges - the Japanese Lit sounds like a good one. Have a great week!

  3. Nice to pick out lots of great books for FREE! I haven't been to the library in a while, but think I should make a trip now! Thanks for reminding me what a great source our libraries are!

I can't wait to see what you thought of your new books for the Japanese Challenge! A Wild Sheep Chase is in my TBR pile, but have heard great things about Beauty and Sadness. Enjoy your new challenge too!

    Have a great week!

  4. Mary: I'll finish Dim Sum Dead as I don't remember the plot. It's light and fun reading.

Diane and Suzanne: Will do a review of Wild Sheep Chase after a while. I think that The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Norwegian Wood are two of his best, though. Have those on my list.

  5. I hate when I start a book and then realize I've already read it. Good luck with the challenge!

  6. Thanks for reminding us about the library. I live around the corner from a beautiful library, but haven't been in ages!

I used to go all the time. Must get back into the habit.

Of course my TBR stack keeps me busy, too. LOL.

  7. bermudaonion: I hope to find some new books by filling in the sub genres in this challenge!

Laurel-Rain Snow: Am winding down on review books as I don't want to have to send them back after I review. I'd rather go to the library, which is where I'll be donating new review books after the end of this month.

  10. I got almost all the way to the end of a book once before finally realizing that I'd already read it. Dim Sum Dead sounds interesting so I might check that one out.

I absolutely loved working at a library because I was always finding new books to read and I really expanded my reading out of my usual genres. Some days I do miss it. I haven't used our library nearly enough this year as my reading time diminished and I had lots of our own books to catch up on.
