Wordless Wednesday

Winter berries are still on the bush,
though the leaves have now gone. They stand out in the snow.

The bush is a rockspray cotoneaster, identified for me by Jodi of Blooming Writer: Gardening in Nova Scotia. Click on the picture to enlarge it, and click on the link to visit Jodi's wonderful garden blog.

  1. Pretty picture! I wonder which birds or animals eat them. They need something for the winter time.

  5. Hi Harvee: Thanks for stopping by earlier. Your plant looks like a rockspray cotoneaster (Cotoneaster horizontalis); is it sprawling on the ground, creeping a bit year by year (unless you prune it)? That's what it seemed like when I expanded the photo. It's a nice shrub and birds do eat the fruit in winter, once cold weather/frosts have sweetened it a bit. Plus as you observe, it pushes back the drearies of winter, giving us a nice boost of colour.

  6. Jodi: Yes, it does sprawl close to the ground and I do have to prune it. Glad to know the birds will eat it, and it does brighten up a bit of the yard! Thanks for identifying it for me. I love your garden blog!
