The Sister-in-Law by Joanne Ryan
Jan. 27, 2025; Boldwood Books, NetGalley
My take:
When Megan loses her husband Rick in a car accident, she takes in a pregnant woman, Emily, who says she is Rick's long estranged sister now escaping an abusive relationship. Little does Megan realize, however, that sister-in-law Emily has tricks up her sleeve to have Megan take care of her and her unborn baby.
I liked that in the last part of the story, Megan reveal herself as someone the reader does not expect, someone not so easily run over by a stranger. I also was intrigued that a third person, a woman who has taken care of Megan all her life, intervenes at the end, to change the story.
The plot twists and character twists make this a very good suspense read.

I hope to get back to reading French novels in the new year, starting out with this romance from NetGalley.

I found this book listed in French on goodreads and in NetGalley. There is no English translated book on Goodreads.
The romance tropes are familiar: a couple in a mountain retreat who must fool the guy's parents into thinking the unfamiliar girl is his fiancee. Then comes the start of a romance, of course.
I find it easier to read light novels in French, but here are some thrillers that will take me a bit longer to read. I really enjoy the author, Michel Bussi, for example, and have several new and older books I haven't tried yet.

Genre: thriller, mystery, suspense, France
A man's corpse is discovered and authorities don't know if it was an accidental death, a murder, or a suicide.
They delve into his past and follow the info in the three different passports found in his car, in different names. Seems the unknown man had three different women waiting for him in his three different lives. Or is that so?
I'll read on to find out, in French!

Black magic, murders, the past....set on a Caribbean island that is a department and region of France. By the author, a "master of manipulation and illusion."
Someof Bussi's earlier books are in English translation, most notably Black Water Lilies, set in Claude Monet's gardens in Giverny, France.
What are you reading or watching this fine wintry day?
I'm very impressed! Reading books in French is wonderful. You are inspiring me to try to read a couple of the books on my children's book list that seem to be only available in French. Thank you for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year. I am reading A Broken Kind of Beautiful by Katie Ganshert.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that there were books on other languages on NetGalley. Although that makes perfect sense. These sound like some great reads for you. I hope you’re able to get back into your French reading.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought of picking up a simpler book in French to help dust off my very rusted French language. Good idea. Thank you. Happy New Year and happy reading! J'espère que vous aimerez ce livre.
ReplyDeleteThe Sister-in-Law sounds like a twisty good read. I am not able to read French, but I am glad you shared the French books with us. I love hearing what is out there in other languages. I hope to settle in with my reading soon. Have a great week and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI too am impressed that you are reading in French. I tend to read translations by authors from Quebec. I might try a french picture book if I can find any around here.
