Sunday Salon: Vive la France!

Welcome to the Sunday Salon where bloggers share their reading each week. Visit The Sunday Post hosted by The Caffeinated Bookreviewer. Also visit Mailbox Monday.

Devastated by the vivid news on CNN and other channels of the tragic events in Paris. Just a few days ago, I was thinking of that city, seeing very vividly the Seine at night, flanked by trees, calmly lit up by lights and barges on the water and thinking I'd love to have an apartment in Paris with that exact view. Thinking of the people in that beautiful city....

I am still reading The Bone Tree by Greg Iles, the second in the trilogy based on the Civil Rights era of the 1960s, the murders of civil rights workers in the south, and theories linking a New Orleans Sicilian mobster and the death of President John F. Kennedy.

I also have three nonfiction books that I''m slowly getting through.

New books that arrived:

Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier, a novel published September 1, 2015 by William Morrow Paperbacks.
I have read this one before but am eager to reread it. Du Maurier wrote such wonderful romantic suspense, such as this one set on the Cornish coast.

The Witch's Market by Mingmei Yip, to be released November 24, 2015 by Kensington.
Set in the Canary Islands, the novel deals with a research project on witches by a San Francisco professor. It involves a journey of intrigue, romance, and self-discovery.
The book was sent by the author for review. I am looking forward to reading it.

What's on your reading desk this week?

  1. It's my book birthday month and Cybils month, so I'm knee-deep in books. And that's how I like it.

  2. The news from France is indeed horrendous.

I have relatives there as well as several social media friends so it is especially distressing. Luckily everyone I know is OK.

I have heard a lot about Jamaica Inn, I am curious as to what you think of it.

The description of The Witches Market sounds interesting.

  4. I need to read Jamaica Inn. I love Daphne du Maurier but I didn't love Frenchman's Creek and haven't read anything in awhile. The Witch's Market sounds interesting and that cover is stunning. Have a great week!

  5. The Bone Tree sounds good, but one to read occasionally, since it is so long.

I have a copy of Jamaica Inn...I bought it, and Rebecca, for a reread...a while ago.

Enjoy! Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  8. I wasn't thrilled with Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, so I'm not sure how much I'd like Jamaica Inn. Happy reading though.

  12. Hi Harvee,

I am so jealous of you getting your hands on a copy of 'Jamaica Inn'. Daphne du Maurier is one of my favourite authors and I haven't read this particular book since I was very young. I hope you enjoy it!

I love it when an author or publisher invites me to read something completely out of the ordinary, it is generall either a resounding 'hit' or a terrible 'miss'. I love the evocative cover art although for me, it didn't totally fit with the storyline. It has to be worth a try though, as I love the Canary Islands and have spent many happy holidays there!

Have a great week and 'Happy Reading'

    Yvonne :)
