Sunday Salon: Books I'll Read and Books I Won't

Welcome to the Sunday Salon where bloggers share their reading each week. Visit The Sunday Post hosted by The Caffeinated Bookreviewer. Also visit It's Monday: What Are You Reading hosted by Book Journey, and Mailbox Monday.

I won this book and was hoping to start reading it soon, but.....

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon, paperback published January 6, 2015 by Anchor.

I happened to glance at a reader's rating and comments on Goodreads, and I didn't like what I saw. Strange supernatural elements! I don't read Stephen King. So what should I do re this book? Read it and shudder, have nightmares, or pass it on?

I did get some lovely cozies too, much easier for me to read...

Assault and Pepper: A Spice Shop Mystery by Leslie Budewitz, first in a new mystery by Agatha Award-winning author of Death al Dente. To be published March 3, 2015 by Berkley. Set in Seattle's Pike Place Market.

How to Catch a Cat: A Cats and Curios Mystery by Rebecca M. Hale, st in San Francisco. To be published March 3, 2015 by Berkley.

Horse of a Different Killer: A Call of the Wilde Mystery by Laura Morrigan, A psychic animal behaviorist who can communicate with animals. I read and reviewed A Tiger's Tale, the previous book in the series, and really liked it. I expect this one will be good too.

What's new on your reading shelf?

  1. Harvee, the title of your post is great! I hadn't heard of The Winter People before. I hope you enjoy the cozies. The titles crack me up. Have a relaxing Sunday.

  2. I read one book by the author of The Winter People, and didn't like it. I think I would hesitate, too, with that description.

Your other books look delightful, though; cozies are always a good choice, IMO. The titles and covers alone make me want to grab them.

  3. I read THE WINTER PEOPLE a few weeks ago and liked it very much. But, I'm also a Stephen King fan. With Jennifer McMahon, you're never quite sure if the odd things are supernatural or not. If that's something that disturbs you, I'd pass the book along to someone else. Life's too short. :-)

  4. I wasn't a fan of Winter People, but the cozies sound good -

  5. I vote for skipping and reading the cozies. Life is too short unless you can either learn something from or take pleasure in reading a yucky book.

  6. I am always intrigued by the clever titles of cozy mysteries :)

  7. You raise a really interesting point Harvee. Though I was "fearless" reader when younger there are certain subjects that I will not read about anymore. This is at least true for fiction with me. Oddly I am usually able to take non fictional books that are disturbing.

  8. I have mixed feelings on books like that, sometimes I like those elements and sometimes I don't. I know what you mean though, I don't always like to be scared- depends on the book. Cozies though, I always love those titles and covers even if I don't read a ton of them. Assault and Pepper- that;s funny. :)

  9. I looked at The Winter People last year and decided against it b/c of all the supernatural stuff (not my scene). But, then had regrets since so many people had great things to say about it. Still..probably won't read it. If it's not your thing, move on to something that is!

  10. That's a tough decision on The Winter People. I've had books I've read and loved that I didn't expect too but that definitely doesn't always happen. I do love your other books though. Rebecca Hale's cat series is fun - it's like middle grade adventure designed for adults! Assault and Pepper is on my wishlist. Just the idea of a mystery set in a spice store makes me happy. Have a great week!

  11. You can give The Winter People a try and if it's not for you just pass it on. Sometimes this situation happens to me too and it's best to just move on! Your new cozies look really cute! Happy reading :)

  13. I don't care for the genre so I'd probably pass on TWP. Have a good week!

  14. I'd probably pass it on. Saying something is like King is enough to let me know I probably won't like it. You can see my week here. Happy reading!

  15. You could even do a giveaway if you were so-inclined. I'd just give it to a friend or the library.

  16. I wanted to read it too until I saw the supernatural stuff.

Your cozies do look so cute.

    ENJOY your week of reading.

  17. I enjoyed Winter People, but then I like Stephen King and spooky, creepy stories. And this was a bit creepy.
